Hotel Review: Dzongkar Residency, Gangtok

We often read online about people who left their corporate jobs, moved to the mountains, and started their own B&B or a Homestay. Meeting Kunga and Sonam was my first-hand experience of actually seeing it for real!

Owned by the sibling Trio - Ms. Kunga, Ms. Sonam and Mr. Tashi Rabden, Dzongkar Residency is a brand new hotel just a minute’s walk from the bustling center of #Gangtok – MG Road.

During our recent visit to Gangtok, Kunga invited us over for a #staycation. This review covers our experience at Dzongkar Residency.

It is a boutique 3-star hotel with 25 rooms. It is cozy yet modern!

We were assigned a room offering a #Kanchenjunga View. With a king-size bed, these rooms are bigger than a usual 3-star or even a 4 Star room size with ample space on the side of the window with a coffee table and two chairs. The rooms are tastefully done from the lines to the covers, curtains, etc are chosen to keep the color palate in mind, which is truly impressive!

The rooms are equipped with all the modern amenities such as Flat Screen TV, Wi-fi, tea-coffee maker etc. They had kept a fruit basket on our arrival as well.

We were surprised to see branded and quality bathroom supplies for a small hotel like this. It shows extra effort taken for sure. They have maintained a high level of hygiene throughout the property.

Dzongkar Residency currently does not have a fully functional kitchen but they do provide breakfast on request on A la carte basis. Our breakfast was filling and offered just about everything like eggs, toast, juice, hash brown potatoes etc.

The hotel staff was extremely helpful from the beginning. They assisted us in many things including arranging our travel for Nathu La. Housekeeping was super quick too.

Also, this may seem like an irrelevant point for any city hotel but at a hilly location like Gangtok, Elevator in a 3-star hotel is a privilege. So, thanks to the owners for being thoughtful.

From the different room categories, I quite liked the one we stayed in – The Mountain view room as well as their Deluxe Room and Family Room (that had two separate king beds along with a sofa. The room was huge!)

During our conversation with the owners, we found out that having worked as Cabin Crew and visiting various hotels across the country, Ms. Kunga and Ms. Sonam (Who are also Hotel Management Graduates) always wanted to do something of their own. They would notice detailing in hotels during their travel and they have tried implementing that and much more at Dzongkar. Whether taking inspiration from #Pinterest, Handpicking unique art pieces/photographs/infographics for rooms, or getting their furniture custom-made all the way from #Delhi, they go the extra mile to think forward. All of this really makes it a cut above a regular 3-star hotel.
